Dear friend,      Here marks the start of a journey -- a journey to friendship, to self-awareness, to acceptance; a journey that will be defined only by what you make of it. There are no specific rules on this journey, but merely a set of guidelines: be and find a friend. Participants are to be received and welcomed without malice, particularly that which comes in the form of prejudice.      Obviously we can't sail the Caribbean over Livejournal, so let me explain exactly what this journey is. First, I should state that the idea was inspired by Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower. His book is somewhat like a miracle, giving countless people a character [Charlie] and a story they can undoubtedly connect with. This community was made to recognize the most essential character in Chbosky’s novel -- “friend”. While many people wish for or even idolize Charlie, I am sure there are an equal share of people who would appreciate someone like “friend” -- someone who listens and understands and doesn’t try to sleep with that person at that party even though he could have; someone who is alive and appreciates what that means [paraphrased from Page 2 of The Perks...]. Like Charlie, we all need to know that those people exist -- or at least can exist. Therefore, this journey was designed to give everybody a chance to have their own “friend”. This can be achieved in a variety of ways -- through letters or e-mails, through mixtape exchange, through book swapping, through postcards or mailed polaroids, etc. The key is that in order for everybody to have a “friend”, some of you must be a “friend”.      You can join this community if you would like to be a “Charlie”, a “friend”, or both. The only thing I ask is that you please go through with it. At least start before you decide to stop. Everything here will be kept confidential [e.g. if you give out your address to receive letters, it will be kept entirely private]. Please note that the community can also be used for discussion [of The Perks, an inspiring book or movie, songs that make you feel "infinite", etc]; posts do not necessarily have to focus around the so-called "journey".      Questions and comments are welcome by e-mail.
Love always, Your moderator
NOTE: NO LONGER RESPONDING TO APPLICATIONS, BUT FEEL FREE TO POST IN THE COMMUNITY TO TRY TO FIND A FRIEND OR A CHARLIE.
